STORY DAYS IN FRANCE

The tabs below represent the story days in France for The Camera film production. In sequence, in this synopsized version of the screenplay, you can follow the story's hero, a young filmmaker named William, as he makes a pilgrimage day by day across France in honor of his late father.

William arrives in Arles and explores the city. He strolls the Place de la République, the Sainte Anne Chapel and the ancient Roman ampitheatre, making his way to the Place Lamartine in the center of Arles and the sight of Van Gogh's famous painting "Café Terrace At Night."

William leaves Arles and heads east through the Bouches-du-Rhône. He hikes a trail along the Alpilles Mountains and reaches the village of Les-Baux-de-Provence at the end of the day, where he camps for the night on a hillside.

William explores Les-Baux-de-Provence, its castle ruins and its Celtic history. He films tourists going into and out of shops, etc. At the end of the day, outside the village, he attends the Carrières des Lumières, a light exhibition of art and artists in an abandoned limestone quarry, where he meets Elyna, a young French photo journalist who is also on a pilgrimage. They have a brief conversation and go their separate ways.

William awakens on the hillside the following morning, bundles his belongings into his backpack and sets out on the trail, where he encounters Elyna once again. They strike up a conversation and William learns they are both headed to the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, another 9 or 10 days away. They agree to hike together and journey into the Vaucluse. At dark, they set up camp and Elyna falls asleep.

Having spent the night in a field, William and Elyna awaken in their own sleeping bags and set off on the trail. They arrive at the hilltop village of Gordes and enter the town, where they have lunch at a local café and William visits the Eglise Saint-Firmin, a church his father visited 25 years earlier. He films the inside of the church and Elyna outside the church when he exits. They leave Gordes and head toward Roussillon, a village Elyna has talked about off the beaten path and insists they visit. They arrive at Bonnelly Vineyards outside of Roussillon and make camp.

Awakened the next morning by Bonnelly, the young vintner who runs the winery, he urges them inside where they learn about the vineyard's unique history: Irish playwright Samuel Beckett as a member of the French underground fled the Nazis in Paris during WWII and hid out in Roussillon for the remainder of the war. The vineyard is mentioned in Beckett's play "Waiting for Godot" and Bonnelly takes great pride in telling the story. William & Elyna say goodbye. They explore Roussillon. William foots the bill for a hotel and that night makes his first pass at Elyna, who rejects him.

The following day, William & Elyna hike the ochre quarry at the edge of the village, where they encounter an elderly man who tells them a mythical story about how the clay surrounding Roussillon turned red. They spend the rest of the day exploring the shops and churches of the village and agree to spend another night at the hotel. It's been a long day and Elyna falls asleep before William can take off his shoes.

Out of bed early, packed and ready to go, Elyna goes to the hotel's coffee shop, where she calls a friend on her cellphone. She returns to the room with coffee and croissants and urges William to "get moving." They leave Roussillon and once again are on the trail through the Vaucluse. They pass miles of dormant lavender fields and take several breaks along the way. Finally, at the end of the day, the village of Simiane la Rontonde sits nestled on a hill in the distance. They make their way into the village and sleep the night in a church.

The following morning, they make their way to the small village of Banon. Along the way, each learns more about the other's reasons for making the pilgrimage and they form a common bond. That night, after visiting an extravagant bookstore and eating locally-made sausages, they sleep in another church in Banon, at the top of the village. Elyna tells William the story of her life and he listens. William expresses his doubts about wanting to be a filmmaker and Elyna encourages him. "You only have to dive into your life," she advises.

The next morning, the church empty, after William has packed up, Elyna takes him by the hand and leads him through a door into a back room, where she seduces him. Taken completely by surprise, he cooperates but openly worries about making love in a church. "It's where love belongs," replies Elyna and he's not one to disagree. Later, on the trail out of town, few words are spoken. William's pilgrimage to his father has morphed into a life lesson on love. That night, in the town of Forcalquier, Elyna foots the bill for a hotel room and they make love in a more proper setting.

The following morning, William finds Elyna in the hotel lobby talking on her cellphone as she checks out at the front desk. They catch a quick breakfast and attend the local market on their way out of town. At the market, William loses sight of Elyna and when he goes to look for her, she's nowhere to be found. After hours of searching, despondent, he decides to leave Forcalquier on his own. Down the trail, getting rockier as he enters the mountainous region, he camps out alone under the stars.

For the next three days, we follow William on the trail. He walks miles through the dormant lavender fields of the Valensole, up steep hills and over rocks. His journey gets harder by the day and he's utterly alone. Each night he sleeps outdoors until, finally, at the end of the third day, he reaches the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Exhausted, he checks into a cheap hotel and crashes on a sofa bed in a tiny room.

William awakens and decides to spend his last day in France exploring Moustiers, a village featured prominently in his father's 16mm film. He visits various places his father visited years earlier, climbing up a steep ridge to a mountaintop church and down again. He films along the way--people and places. As he's making arrangements to have a taxi pick him up and take him to the airport, he sees Elyna sitting at an outdoor café with two young men. He approaches and can't bring himself to ask why she deserted him. Oblivious to his pain, she invites him to an outing at the Gorges du Verdon, just outside the village. William declines but later appears when Elyna's friends are cliff diving into the Verdon River. In a moment of bravery if not sheer stupidity, Elyna watching from a boat below, Willam dives off the 30-meter cliff into the water. Into his new life.
